Tocopherols, a class of organic compounds consisting of various methylated phenols, many of which exhibit vitamin E activity. Named tocopherol from the Greek words τόκος (tókos) meaning 'birth' and φέρειν (phérein) meaning 'to bear or carry', indicating 'to carry a pregnancy', with the suffix '-ol' denoting its status as a chemical alcohol. α-Tocopherol is predominantly found in supplements and the European diet, primarily sourced from olive and sunflower oils, whereas γ-tocopherol is more common in the American diet due to higher consumption of soybean and corn oil.
Tocotrienols, related compounds, also possess vitamin E activity. All these derivatives with vitamin activity are correctly referred to as "vitamin E." Tocopherols and tocotrienols act as fat-soluble antioxidants and have various other functions in the body.
