Salicylic Acid

Salicylic Acid is a colorless (or white), bitter-tasting solid organic compound with the formula HOC6H4COOH. It acts as a precursor and metabolite of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) and is recognized as a plant hormone. Named after the Latin word for willow tree, "salix," from which it was first derived and identified, salicylic acid is widely used in anti-acne products due to its anti-inflammatory and exfoliating properties. Salts and esters of salicylic acid are referred to as salicylates.

Effects in Cosmetics

Salicylic acid offers various benefits and applications, including:

Facilitating the shedding of the outer layer of skin, preventing pore clogs, and encouraging new cell growth.
Treating acne, exfoliating, reducing the thickness of the stratum corneum, and improving skin texture.
Its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce swelling and inflammation, significantly effective against pimples and acne.


Natural Source: Originally extracted from the willow tree.
Chemical Synthesis: Can be synthesized through various methods, including reacting sodium phenolate (the sodium salt of phenol) with carbon dioxide under high pressure and temperature.

Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals 

Topical use of high concentrations of salicylic ointment can lead to significant levels of salicylic acid entering the bloodstream, requiring dialysis to avoid further complications.
Despite being listed as an experimental teratogen, cosmetic applications of salicylic acid pose no significant risk to pregnant women.
