Propylparaben, scientifically known as the n-propyl ester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, naturally occurs in many plants and insects. It can also be synthesized for use in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food products. As a member of the parabens family, it is primarily used as a preservative in a wide range of water-based cosmetics like creams, lotions, shampoos, and bath products. In the food industry, propylparaben is recognized as a food additive with the E number E216, indicating its certified application as a food preservative. Additionally, the sodium salt of Propyl Paraben (Sodium propyl p-hydroxybenzoate) is utilized similarly as a food additive and anti-fungal agent with the E number E217.

Effects in Cosmetics

Propylparaben serves multiple functions and applications in cosmetics, including:

Extending the shelf life of products as a preservative.
Maintaining chemical stability across a wide pH range.
Protecting products from microbial growth to prevent bacterial and fungal contamination.

The use in food

As a food additive, it prevents spoilage and extends shelf life.

Synthetically produced through the esterification of p-hydroxybenzoic acid with propanol.

Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals 

The European Union Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety deemed its use in cosmetics as safe for consumers if the total concentration does not exceed 0.19%.
Considered safe for normal skin, but may cause sensitivity reactions in damaged or sensitive skin.
