CI77491-Red-Iron Oxide

CI 77491, also known as Iron Oxides Red (CI77491-Red-Iron Oxide), is a common synthetic additive in cosmetics, with the chemical formula Fe2O3. This ingredient is responsible for giving cosmetics and skincare products a red or pink hue, making them more appealing. Iron oxide CI 77491 is a durable and affordable pigment that works well with almost all other ingredients. Beyond improving product appearance, CI 77491 is widely used in cosmetics for its reflective property to diffuse light, thereby covering imperfections and helping to even out skin tone.

Uses in Cosmetics

Iron oxide CI 77491 has a variety of effects and applications, listed as follows:

Acts as a pigment, imparting a red or pink hue to cosmetics and skincare products.
In cosmetics, its reflective property helps to scatter light, thus covering skin imperfections and improving skin tone uniformity.
In skincare products, especially sunscreens, it offers protection against specific wavelengths of light, such as UV light, visible light, and blue light.

Iron oxide CI 77491 naturally exists on the earth's surface, mainly obtained through the mineral hematite.
Since natural red iron oxide contains impurities that may be harmful to the skin, such as manganese, synthetically made red iron oxide, which is considered safer, is generally used in cosmetics and skincare products.
Synthetic red iron oxide can be prepared by the calcination of copperas or hydrates of iron.

Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals

Iron oxide CI 77491 is considered safe as it is non-allergenic and non-toxic.
Although considered safe, a patch test is recommended before full application.
Iron oxide is also halal.
